Humility is another virtue that God looks for in determining mankind’s trustworthiness. When God anointed Gideon with leadership to “save” Israel, in humility Gideon did not consider himself worthy because he was from a poor family in Manasseh and the least in his father’s house. God reassures him saying, “Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man”. (Judges 6:14-16).
Also, when God promised King David that his kingdom and throne shall be established forever, in humility, “he went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?” And he magnified and praised God. (2 Samuel 7:7:18 -26).
Brethren God would only trust one with his promises and leadership if we are of a humble spirit. For instance when king Nebuchadnezzar’s “heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him”. God removed him from among men and gave him a heart of a beast and his dwelling was in the wild. He was made to eat grass like oxen “till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he [appointed] over it whomsoever he will”. (Daniel 5:20-21). God will exalt those who are humble and abase the proud look. He sets on high those who are lowly. (Job 5:11; Proverbs 29:23; Matthew 23:12; Luke 14:11; James 4:10).
