Today, Jesus is “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”, the “righteous Branch” and “King”, that shall deliver God’s people to serve Him in holiness and righteousness.
But, before the reign of Jesus, Israel knew God by the deliverances of the children of Israel from the bondage in Egypt; and the Mosaic laws was the medium of God’s righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:5-7; Luke 1.68-75). Jesus said of the laws, “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness”. (Matthew 3:15).
The core precepts for righteousness is to acknowledge that “The Lord our God is one Lord”; and that “thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might”, (and thy neighbour as thyself). (Deuteronomy 6:4-6; Luke 10:).
Also, we must fear the Lord and serve him, not go after other gods, must not tempt God, and “[to] do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord”. (Deuteronomy 6:12-18).
The people must obey these commandment as a “testimony” of the “righteousness of God”, Who delivered them from bondage in Egypt. (Deuteronomy 6:21-23 & 5:6-22). In return God shall preserve them alive, ensure their “good” and they shall “swear by His name” and it “shall be [their] righteousness” (Deuteronomy 6:24-25).
