EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH V : FAITH BY WORKS

After their exodus from Egypt, Moses and Aaron led the children of Israel in the dissert wilderness. The people thirsted for water and there was no water to drink. They gathered themselves against Moses and Aaron and murmured saying, “Give us water that we may drink”; and said “[why] hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us …with thirst?” They were almost ready to stone Moses (Exodus 17:1-4; Numbers 20:2-3). How did Moses express His faith?

Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces and cried unto the Lord saying, “What shall I do unto this people?” (Exodus 17:4; Numbers 20:6). The Lord commanded Moses to gather the congregation and with Aaron his brother; and to take his rod and go. Moses took his rod and with Aaron and gathered the congregation together before the rock (Exodus 17:5; Numbers 20:9).

And God said to him ” speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock” so the people and their beasts may drink (Numbers 20:8). Moses said to the people “hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And [he] lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice.” Then water came out of the rock abundantly and the people and their cattle drank. (Numbers 20:10-11).

He called this the waters of ‘Meriba’ because the people strove with God (Exodus 17:7). But God said to Moses and Aaron “because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them” (Numbers 20:12).

Moses Faith could manifest in situations where one desires and seeks something of God but does not obey God’s specific command and boast in their own strength rather than give glory to God.
