EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH IV :’BELIEF’ IN FAITH’

There was a man born blind who often sat and begged. When Jesus saw him, hespat on the ground, and made clay

of the spittle” and he anointed his eyes and sent him to go wash in the “pool of Siloam”. The blind man went and washed and came back seeing (John 9:1-7). Jesus explains to his disciples that the Man’s condition was not a consequence of sin but to make the God’s works manifest in him (John 9:2-5). The healing provoked controversy among the Jews because it was done on the Sabbath.

How did the Man express his faith? He did not know who Jesus was but allowed him to anoint his eyes and did as he was told (John 9:11-12). He was at risk of being excommunicated from the synagogue yet was unafraid to testify to the religious authorities that Jesus restored his sight (John 9:13-17 & 22). When it was suggested to him that Christ was a “sinner”, he refused to blaspheme and avoided religious debates but gave Jesus the praise for opening his eyes and confessed that Jesus was of God (John 9:24-25 & 9:30-33). When Jesus asked if he believed “on the Son of God” and identified himself, the Man said, “Lord, I believe and he worshipped him” (John 9:36-38).

This faith expression would manifest in situations where one believes on Jesus as the Son of God and faces religious opposition yet remains unwavering in the faith.
