EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH II – ‘Faith Relationship with God

Abraham’s faith expresses in a willing forsaking of his past for a relationship with God Almighty. God told Abraham to get out of his country, away from his kindred and father’s house for “a land” that God would show him. God promised to make him “a great nation”, bless him, and make his name great; and all families of the earth would be blessed in him (Genesis 12:1-3).

Abraham “obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going” taking his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot to go into the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:4-5; Hebrews 11:8). During his journey, “he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord” (Genesis 12:5-8).

While the promise by God to make Abraham “a great nation” presents good reason why he would move, the faith expressed was not in the promise of land, or greatness. Rather the faith was in forsaking the certain way of life he had known for 75 years to an uncertainty – i.e. not knowing his destination.

Abraham’s kind of faith would manifest in cases where one feels uncertain about the outcome of a situation but goes ahead notwithstanding, believing that God is able to make perfect the outcome.
